Activate a License

Add your license key to the server configuration and restart ricochet.

[license]
key = "XXXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX-V3"

You can set the key as an environment variable instead:

Terminal window
RICOCHET_LICENSE__KEY=XXXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX-XXXXXX-V3

ricochet reads the key when it starts and checks it with the license server every hour. Each key activates one ricochet instance.

A server without internet access uses a license file instead of a key. License files need the air-gapped add-on, which you can add when you buy the license or later under Change features.

  1. Open the license in the license portal and select Download License File.
  2. Enter the machine fingerprint of the server that will use the file.
  3. Copy the file to the server and point file at it:
[license]
file = "license.lic"

A relative path is resolved under RICOCHET_HOME. The file only works on the machine whose fingerprint it was issued for.

ricochet logs its fingerprint every time it starts:

INFO Machine identity fingerprint=Host("4c4c4544004c3510804bb7c04f383732")

Copy the value in quotes. To read it before ricochet runs on the server, use the command for its platform.

Linux:

Terminal window
cat /etc/machine-id

macOS:

Terminal window
ioreg -rd1 -c IOPlatformExpertDevice | awk -F'"' '/IOPlatformUUID/ {print $4}'

Windows (PowerShell):

Terminal window
(Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Cryptography').MachineGuid

Kubernetes:

Terminal window
kubectl get namespace kube-system -o jsonpath='{.metadata.uid}'

On Kubernetes, one fingerprint covers the whole cluster, so ricochet keeps its license when pods move between nodes.

A license covers the number of apps and tasks you bought. Once they are all in use, deploying a new app or task fails with a message that names the limit. Redeploying existing content keeps working. To raise a limit, open the license in the license portal and select Change features.

When a license expires or its subscription is canceled, ricochet keeps running as the Community Edition. Features and limits beyond the Community Edition stop applying within the hour.
